Typically an urban area has a maze of underground piping, ducts, watermains, sewers, and other structures, the exact location of which must be known and monitored by utility companies and government agencies.

Utilities and other infrastructure onwers have positioned their assets relative to a digital cadastre (landbase) which is now being upgraded to a higher level of accuracy. On loading the new cadastre they are faced with the expensive, error prone and cumbersome task of manualy repositioning the assets. It is tempting to delay upgrading but this means

  • Underground assets cannot be accurately located
  • Emergency Response is hindered
  • Dial before you Dig Responses are unreliable
  • Staff and customers lose confidence in the data
  • Data cannot be shared with other organisations.

Why have an upgraded cadastre?

In this example the new cadastre in grey has the correct absolute position but the red power poles layer is mis-aligned relative to the new cadastre. Some lines have ended up in the middle of the road, while others are displaying in private property.

Our GIS platform independent software, automates the positional accuracy improvement of both the digital cadastre and the utility assets whether above or underground.

Spatial Tapestry Product Summary

SAM repositions infrastructure assets to align them to an updated, more accurate landbase.

SAM Utils moves your assets from the 'old' digital cadastre to the 'new' digital cadastre.
SAM Cad moves your 'old' cadastre and assets to a CAD (e.g. DXF) version of a small piece of the 'new' digital cadastre.
SAM Ortho moves your 'old' cadastre and assets to align with a high resolution/accuracy ortho photo.

NOTE: SAM does not change the topology of the features it processes. It simply replaces each and every coordinate with a better easting and northing.

TOPO cleans and realigns topology within and between themes

TOPO Test has two functions

1. Tests the internal consistency of your digital cadastre for unreasonably sharp angles, gaps, overlays, and unsnapped parcels at the road frontage.
2. Test one theme (such as a zoning layer) for line elements not found in other themes (e.g. digital cadastre and road centrelines) - think of a tool that would tell you the differences between two word documents, what is in one document but missing in the other, and apply that to a suburb map versus a digital cadastre.

TOPO Clean tidies up inconsistencies in a single theme, such as the digital cadastre. Gaps, overlaps, bowties and other anomalies are scrubbed from the theme.

TOPO Snap snaps a theme to one or MORE themes, meaning that a single ABS theme can be snapped down to your cadastre/road and river and railway centrelines.

When are they used?

SAM is used when an organisation improves the accuracy of its digital cadastre – either by obtaining an update from the state government or by an internal improvement program using orthophotography or traditional survey techniques.

TOPO is used when there are topology errors and inaccuracies in a dataset that are impacting on the quality of analysis and business decision making, or when new datasets are imported which do not quite ‘fit’ over the existing layers.

Typically TOPO Test would be run first and the statistics collected, then TOPO Clean or Snap run, and TOPO Test used to compare the difference/improvement and to help target the remaining problems back in the incumbent GIS.

SAM Lite and Topo Lite have been created for sites that store their spatial data in either ESRI Shape Files or MapInfo TAB Files.
